Like most of us we look at the glossy magazines and think I want to look like them. I lot of us hate having their photographs taken by friends and family insist. You freeze up and say 'go away pleaseeeee', however in the corporate world, you need a portrait for websites, annual reports, tenders and marketing collateral. So here are a few hints.
Stop pretending being someone you are not. Most of us see ourselves differently and find it hard to accept who we are. Be proud of you! There is no one in the world like you. Great people photographers met their subjects and chat, laugh and relax your subjects. In the process, we are getting a mental picture of YOU and doubly relaxing the subject a front of a camera and lights. Trust the photographer because most people slouch, don't stand with their head straight and looks frightened.
I like to ask the subject quietly whether they like to smile and is there anything about themselves they feel uncomfortable about. Let's face it if you cracked a tooth you don't want to smile. Tell me please has I have different ways of minimising them. Look above its my photo not showing my teeth but it shows me smiling.
Give us the time to do the portrait properly. I have see subjects who come into the room and tell us they only have 5 minutes instead of the15 minutes booked. After the shoot which they did actually enjoy, she told us she hates her photo taken and wants to get it over with so tells the photographer she only has 5 minutes. The question is if you hated going to the dentist would you tell the dentist you only have 5 minutes to get a filling done?
I will blog more on this over the next few months. RSS this website if you want to automatically get the blog.
